Hi, I’m Robin.
Sometimes people I’m especially close to call me Rob. I consider everyone who holds and enjoys one of my pieces a new a friend. And now that we’re friends, you can call me Rob.
I began my ceramics training in Portland, OR at my alma mater, Lewis and Clark College. After graduation, I continued taking classes at the local community college. I moved to Augusta, Georgia for a year and apprenticed with Tire City Potters, where I refined my throwing and production skills. In 2020, we moved to Richmond, Virginia where I found a new, wonderful clay community
When I’m in my studio, I spend a lot of time considering and negotiating my desire to make every line and form as clean as perfect as I can with the reality of the imperfections that are inevitable in the handmade. I think of it as my inner Martha Stewart on one shoulder and my inner Bob Ross on my other. Together, they keep me striving for excellence (Martha) while still appreciating the unique marks and subtle differences the arise in each piece (Bob).
At it’s core, that’s what my work is really about: the paradoxes of being human, and the fact that two seemingly opposite truths can exists at one. My work seeks to sit in the harmony that somehow lingers in between; I make tight, practiced forms paired with flowy, gestural glaze patterns. The concepts and inspirations are opposite, but together, they work and make something special and beautiful.
Many people see mountain landscapes in my patterns. I love this interpretation, because when I think of the mountains, I imagine a cool and invigorating breath of fresh mountain air, paired with a warm cup of coffee heating up my hands first thing in the morning. Opposite and wonderfully complimentary.
