May 2026: Horseshoe Magnet

The month of May is big for horse people.

And I’ll be honest: I’m not a horse girl. You know what I mean by horse girls, the ones who have horse themed everything, and spend their recesses galloping across the playground. Don’t get me wrong, I have lots of respect for the majestic creatures, but I was never drawn to them in the same way. I’m honestly a little envious of the magic those girls found in their favorite animal.

When I was noodling on the month of May, I of course thought of the holidays: Mother’s Day, Memorial Day... But I also remembered all the orders that would come in to the flower shop in early May for something a little different. We’d get requests for mint sprigs, red roses, and floral decorated fascinators, which are those silly hats that perch just barely on women’s heads.

That’s right: Kentucky Derby season. Now again, I know very little about horses and horse races, but boy do I love an opportunity to see some fun outfits, silly hats, and a mint julep to sip on doesn’t sound so bad either.

Upon conferring with my horse girl friends (horse WOMEN, now), some of whom are actual farmers and really do know a thing or two about horses, I learned that the Kentucky Derby is only one of several big horse events in May, including the Preakness in Maryland.

So this month I decided to get in on the action, and made you a horseshoe magnet for the month of May. And of course I had to research the legend of the horseshoe a little more, and found that there are several elements that make it lucky. The seven holes, a nod to seven being a lucky number; the iron that horseshoes are traditionally made of, a metal said to have mystical powers and even keep evil witches away; and apparently there’s even a disagreement on whether to hang the horseshoe open side up, to keep the luck from spilling out, or open side down on a door, to shower you with luck as you walk through it. I’ll let you decide how you want to position your magnet, but I hope it brings you good fortune no matter what you choose!

And as always, if you’re not already in the club, you’re invited to join me over at magnet club for a surprise monthly magnet shipped to your door!
