August Magnet Club: S’mores
Did you go away to summer camp as a kid? Even if you didn’t head to the mountains for a couple weeks every summer to sleep in old wooden cabins with 12 other kids your age, I bet you spent at least one summer night cozied up by a campfire, swapping ghost stories and singing campfire songs. And I’d be willing to bet that there may have been some graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows involved, because no campfire is complete without s’mores.
At my summer camp, the best strategy for marshmallow roasting was always hotly debated (pun only a little bit intended). Were you a set it on fire and let it get nice and crispy kind of kid? Or slow and steady rotisserie style roaster to achieve the perfect golden brown?
This month’s s’mores magnet is an ode to summer nights shifting into fall, and the sweet treats that bring back even sweeter memories. I remember sitting out under the stars, forgiving the mosquitos for their annoying attacks because it was all worth it to be there enjoying that time with friends I might not get to see for another year at least. S’mores don’t really taste quite as good when they’re not enjoyed outdoors, do they?
