September Magnet Club: Honey Bear
I love early fall, but September can be both a welcome change as the weather cools and fall approaches, and a little bittersweet, as we trade in the feelings of freedom and adventure that come along with summer for autumn’s steadier rhythms and routines.
It turns out, the honey bees are also starting to wind down, as they prepare their hives for winter and the last honey harvests for the season are made. September is National Honey Month, so it seemed only right to celebrate with the cutest part about picking up a jar of honey: the iconic bear container.
I knew I wanted to make something honey related for September for a couple of reasons, one being a nod to Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year celebration that happens every September. The traditional treat for Rosh Hashana is apples drizzled with honey, as a way to welcome a sweet and healthy new year. As Jewish holidays go, this is definitely a top tier treat; Hanukkah latkes are up there too, but I personally will be skipping the gefilte fish that appear at almost every celebratory meal. You can find me at the dessert table, thank you very much. Combine the apples and honey theme with National Honey Month, and I was sold.
Sculpting these little bears was a little challenging at first while I got the hang of the shape. I’m really more of a thrower than a hand builder/sculptor, but magnet club has really helped me refine my skills over this past 10 months. Once I figured out how to make them look like bears instead of weird little mice it all started to come together. That being said, for the moment these are on the very limited side of limited edition, meaning I made just enough for magnet club members and don’t have specific plans to release more for individual purchase. I mean, never say never, and if you’d like to see them come around in the future let me know, but for now they’re going to live squarely as a magnet club exclusive.
